Stephen O’Donnell has challenged his players to push on in the second half of the season after seeing the Lilywhites sign off for the mid-season break with a well-earned 2-1 win over Cork City at Turner’s Cross.

The result leaves Dundalk in fifth place, four points behind second-placed Derry City and a further six behind leaders Shamrock Rovers with 15 league games to play in the second half of the campaign.

“We need to get better,” he said afterwards. “I’m happy that we’re not too far off a lot of teams around us. We’ve said all season that it will settle down but it hasn’t settled. We’re 21 games in and there are results over and back but we need to be better.

“That was always going to be the case with a new group. We’re striving to get better. We spoke about it in there afterwards. We need to come back a better team.”
