WU17: Dundalk FC 3-2 Finn Harps

Dundalk WU17s recorded an impressive 3-2 victory over Finn Harps at Oriel Park on Sunday, producing a determined performance to secure all three points.

With debutants Anna Russell and Georgia Holohan included in the squad, Dundalk were made to work hard throughout against a talented Finn Harps side, ultimately showing their quality and strength in depth to get over the line.

The hosts took the lead after 25 minutes when Siun Kirby provided the assist for Mackenzie Crowley to finish. Roy Armstrong’s side doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time, with Kirby again the creator as Sarah Burkefound the net.

Finn Harps responded just before the break, with Kelly scoring in the 44th minute to reduce the deficit and give the visitors renewed momentum heading into the second half.

Dundalk restored their two-goal cushion in the 67th minute when Danielle Cromwell finished well after excellent work from Crowley. Harps refused to go away, though, and Shauna Doohan struck to make it 3-2, setting up a tense finish.

The home side had to dig deep in the closing stages, but Dundalk defended with discipline and composure to see out the game and claim a deserved win.

Manager Roy Armstrong praised his side afterwards. He said: “We put a lot of unneeded pressure on ourselves, but we showed great fight and determination to see the game out. We now have six points out of nine, which is a great return after a short pre-season.”

Dundalk: McCabe, Barry, Farnan, Cromwell, Gibson, Kirby, Smyth, Hall, Burke, Russell, Crowley. Subs: Silva De Presbiteris, Callaghan, Treanor, Smyth, Holohan, Sherlock, Carolan.
